Code P0731 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The transmission turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor are hall-effect sensors. The turbine speed sensor is mounted to the transmission housing and faces the reluctor attached to the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing. The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the low and reverse clutch housing on 2WD, or transfer case rear case half on 4WD. The vehicle speed sensor faces a reluctor wheel attached to the transmission output shaft on 2WD, or a reluctor wheel attached to the transfer case rear output shaft on 4WD.
The TCM provides a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit to each of the sensors. As the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing and transmission output shaft or transfer case output rotates, the sensors produce a signal frequency based on the teeth on the reluctor wheel. The TCM calculates the transmission gear ratio based on the speed sensor signals and compares the calculated gear ratio to the commanded gear ratio.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects the calculated gear ratio with 1st gear commanded differs from the known 1st gear ratio for 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0731 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0731 mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P0731 indicates that the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an incorrect gear ratio in 1st gear, meaning the actual gear ratio doesn't match the expected ratio.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P0731 code in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include poor acceleration, slipping in 1st gear, harsh shifting, the check engine light turning on, and reduced fuel efficiency.

3. What causes the P0731 code in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include low or dirty transmission fluid, a faulty shift solenoid, damaged transmission components (e.g., clutches or bands), or a malfunctioning transmission control module.

4. Can low transmission fluid cause the P0731 code?

Yes, low or dirty transmission fluid can cause improper hydraulic pressure, leading to an incorrect gear ratio and triggering the P0731 code.

5. How is the P0731 code diagnosed on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting wiring and connectors, testing the shift solenoids, and potentially performing a pressure test or internal transmission inspection.

6. Can driving with the P0731 code damage my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Yes, continuing to drive with this code can cause further damage to the transmission and lead to more expensive repairs.

7. How do I fix the P0731 code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include changing or topping off the transmission fluid, replacing a faulty shift solenoid, repairing damaged wiring, or rebuilding the transmission if internal components are worn.

8. Is a transmission rebuild always required for the P0731 code?

No, a rebuild is not always necessary. The issue may be resolved by addressing simpler problems such as fluid issues or faulty solenoids.

9. How much does it cost to fix the P0731 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Costs vary depending on the cause. Simple fixes like replacing transmission fluid or a solenoid may cost $100-$300, while a transmission rebuild could exceed $2,000.

10. Can a software update fix the P0731 code in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

In some cases, a software update for the transmission control module may resolve the issue if it's caused by incorrect programming. Check with a GMC dealer for updates.
