Code P0729 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The transmission turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor are hall-effect sensors. The turbine speed sensor is mounted to the transmission housing and faces the reluctor attached to the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing. The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the low and reverse clutch housing on 2WD, or transfer case rear case half on 4WD. The vehicle speed sensor faces a reluctor wheel attached to the transmission output shaft on 2WD, or a reluctor wheel attached to the transfer case rear output shaft on 4WD.
The TCM provides a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit to each of the sensors. As the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing and transmission output shaft or transfer case output rotates, the sensors produce a signal frequency based on the teeth on the reluctor wheel. The TCM calculates the transmission gear ratio based on the speed sensor signals and compares the calculated gear ratio to the commanded gear ratio.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects the calculated gear ratio with 6th gear commanded differs from the known 6th gear ratio for 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0729 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0729 mean for a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

The P0729 code indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an incorrect gear ratio in 6th gear, suggesting a potential issue with the transmission or related components.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0729 in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include rough or delayed shifting, slipping in 6th gear, a decrease in fuel efficiency, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0729 code to appear on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include low or dirty transmission fluid, a faulty transmission solenoid, damaged clutch packs, a defective PCM, or internal transmission issues.

4. Can driving with a P0729 code damage my 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Yes, continuing to drive with this code can lead to further transmission damage, increased wear, and potential safety issues if the gear fails completely.

5. How can low transmission fluid trigger a P0729 code?

Low transmission fluid can cause inadequate hydraulic pressure, leading to gear slipping or incorrect gear ratios being detected by the PCM.

6. How do you diagnose the P0729 code on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Diagnosis involves scanning for additional codes, checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting wiring and connectors, and testing the transmission solenoids and pressure.

7. What repairs are commonly needed to fix the P0729 code on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing or repairing the transmission solenoid, flushing and refilling the transmission fluid, fixing internal transmission components, or reprogramming the PCM.

8. Can a bad transmission control module cause the P0729 code?

Yes, a malfunctioning transmission control module or PCM can fail to properly monitor gear ratios, leading to the P0729 code.

9. How much does it typically cost to fix the P0729 code on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary widely, from $150 for a fluid change to over $2,000 for major transmission repairs, depending on the root cause.
