Code P0717 2017 Toyota RAV4 Description

The Input Speed sensor detects the rotation speed of the turbine which indicates the input speed of the transaxle. By comparing the input turbine speed (speed sensor NT) signal with the counter gear speed (speed sensor NC) signal, the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects the shift timing of the gears and appropriately controls the engine torque and hydraulic pressure according to various conditions. As a result, the gears shift smoothly.
The NT terminal of the ECM detects a pulse signal from the speed sensor NT (input RPM). The ECM calculates gear shifts by comparing the signal from speed sensor NT with the signal from speed sensor NC.
While the transaxle is operating in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th gear with the shift lever in D, if the input shaft speed is less than 300 rpm although the output shaft speed is more than 1000 rpm, the ECM interprets this as a fault, illuminates the MIL and stores the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

Frequently Asked Questions about P0717 2017 Toyota RAV4 Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0717 mean for a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

P0717 indicates that the transmission’s input speed sensor is not sending a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM), which monitors the rotational speed of the transmission's input shaft.

2. What are the symptoms of code P0717 in a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

Common symptoms include erratic or delayed shifting, transmission slipping, reduced fuel efficiency, the vehicle entering limp mode, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0717 code to appear on a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

Possible causes include a faulty input speed sensor, damaged or corroded wiring or connectors, a malfunctioning PCM, or internal transmission issues.

4. Can I drive my 2017 Toyota RAV4 with a P0717 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it may lead to further transmission damage or unsafe driving conditions due to shifting problems.

5. How do I diagnose a P0717 code on a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

Start by checking the input speed sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to test the sensor for proper resistance and continuity. If no issues are found, further diagnosis of the PCM or transmission may be needed.

6. How do I fix the P0717 code on my 2017 Toyota RAV4?

Repairs may include replacing the input speed sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, or, in rare cases, reprogramming or replacing the PCM.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0717 code on a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $400, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor itself, wiring, or other components.

8. Where is the input speed sensor located on a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

The input speed sensor is usually mounted on the transmission housing, near the input shaft.

9. Can a bad input speed sensor damage the transmission in a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

While a faulty sensor itself may not directly damage the transmission, it can cause improper shifting and increased wear, potentially leading to long-term transmission issues.

10. Will clearing the P0717 code fix the problem on a 2017 Toyota RAV4?

Clearing the code will not fix the underlying issue. The root cause must be diagnosed and repaired to prevent the code from returning.
