Code P0692 Gmc Description

The engine cooling fan system is composed of electric cooling fan and a cooling fan control module. The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the fan speed by sending a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal to the cooling fan control module. The cooling fan control module varies the voltage drop across the cooling fan motor in relation to the pulse width modulated signal, allowing the cooling fan to operate at variable speeds. The cooling fan speed is affected by many different operating conditions and the ECM will adjust the duty cycle based on cooling system requirements.
Generally, the ECM will operate the cooling fan at specific percentages but, may scale the percentages either higher or lower in response to generator demand. The percentages at which the cooling fan operates may vary between vehicle lines and engines.
The cooling fan control module is thermally protected to prevent module damage in the case of a short circuit condition in the cooling fan motor. The scan tool output control is only capable of operating the cooling fan in the speed percentages allowed by the ECM. When multiple cooling fan speed requests are received, the ECM operates the fan at the highest of the speed requests.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the commanded state of the driver and the actual state of the control circuit do not match for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0692 Gmc Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0692 mean on a GMC?

P0692 indicates a problem with the Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit, specifically that the circuit voltage is higher than expected.

2. What are the common symptoms of P0692 on a GMC?

Symptoms may include the cooling fan running continuously, the engine overheating, reduced air conditioning performance, or the check engine light being illuminated.

3. What causes the P0692 code to appear on a GMC?

Common causes include a faulty cooling fan relay, a damaged cooling fan motor, wiring issues (such as shorts or open circuits), or a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM).

4. Can I drive my GMC with a P0692 code?

Driving with a P0692 code is not recommended, as it may lead to engine overheating or other cooling system problems, potentially causing more severe damage.

5. How do I diagnose the P0692 code on a GMC?

Start by inspecting the cooling fan relay, motor, and associated wiring for damage or loose connections. Use a multimeter to check for proper voltage and continuity.

6. How can I fix the P0692 code on my GMC?

Repairs may involve replacing a damaged cooling fan relay or motor, repairing or replacing faulty wiring, or in rare cases, reprogramming or replacing the ECM.

7. Does the P0692 code impact air conditioning performance on a GMC?

Yes, the cooling fan is often critical for proper air conditioning operation. A malfunction can cause reduced performance or failure of the A/C system.

8. How much does it cost to fix a P0692 code on a GMC?

Repair costs vary, but replacing a cooling fan relay typically costs $50–$150, while a cooling fan motor replacement could range from $300–$600, depending on labor and parts.

9. Can a weak battery cause the P0692 code on a GMC?

While rare, a weak or failing battery can sometimes contribute to electrical issues, including cooling fan circuit malfunctions. Testing the battery is a good idea during diagnosis.

10. Will clearing the P0692 code fix the problem on a GMC?

Clearing the code without addressing the underlying issue will not fix the problem, and the code is likely to return until the root cause is resolved.
