Code P0689 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The powertrain relay is a normally open relay. The relay armature is held in the open position by spring tension. Battery positive voltage is supplied directly to the relay coil and the armature contact at all times. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the ground path to the relay coil control circuit via an internal integrated circuit called an Output Driver Module (ODM). The ODM output control is configured to operate as a low side driver for the powertrain relay. The ODM for the powertrain relay also incorporates a fault detection circuit, which is continuously monitored by the ECM. When the ECM commands the powertrain relay ON, ignition 1 voltage is supplied to the ECM, and to several additional circuits.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0689 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0689 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P0689 indicates that the Electronic Control Module (ECM) has detected a low voltage condition in the Power Relay Sense Circuit, which may impact the vehicle's ability to function properly.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0689 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include difficulty starting the engine, intermittent stalling, reduced engine performance, and the Check Engine Light illuminating.

3. What causes the P0689 code to appear on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty ECM power relay, damaged wiring or connectors in the power relay sense circuit, a weak battery, or a failing ECM.

4. Can a bad battery cause the P0689 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a weak or failing battery can cause low voltage in the ECM power relay circuit, triggering the P0689 code.

5. How do you diagnose the P0689 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the ECM power relay, inspecting wiring and connectors in the circuit, testing the battery, and verifying voltage levels at the relay and ECM.

6. Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with the P0689 code active?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can cause engine stalling or starting issues, potentially leaving you stranded.

7. How do you fix the P0689 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing a faulty ECM power relay, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, charging or replacing the battery, or, in rare cases, replacing the ECM.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P0689 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary, but replacing an ECM power relay typically costs $50–$150, while wiring repairs or ECM replacement may be more expensive depending on the extent of the issue.

9. Can a failing ECM cause the P0689 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Yes, although less common, a failing ECM can cause the P0689 code by failing to properly sense or manage the power relay circuit.

10. What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P0689 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Basic diagnostic tools include a multimeter to check voltage, a scan tool to clear codes and monitor the ECM, and wiring diagrams to trace the power relay sense circuit.
