Code P0506 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is the control center for the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) system. The ECM determines the driver's intent based on input from the accelerator pedal position sensors, then calculates the appropriate throttle response based on the throttle position sensors. The Direct Current (DC) motor, located in the Throttle Body Assembly, drives the throttle blade. In order to decrease idle speed, along with spark and fuel delivery changes the ECM commands the throttle closed reducing air flow into the engine and the idle speed decreases. In order to increase idle speed, the ECM commands the throttle plate open allowing more air to pass the throttle plate. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the actual idle speed is approximately 94 RPM lower than the desired idle speed.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0506 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does code P0506 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P0506 indicates that the engine's idle speed is lower than the manufacturer’s specified range.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0506 in a GMC Sierra?

Symptoms include rough idling, engine stalling, decreased fuel efficiency, and potential hesitation during acceleration.

3. What causes P0506 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a dirty throttle body, vacuum leaks, a faulty idle air control valve, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

4. Can a dirty throttle body trigger code P0506?

Yes, carbon buildup in the throttle body can restrict airflow and lower the idle speed, triggering P0506.

5. How do you fix code P0506 on a GMC Sierra?

Start by cleaning the throttle body, checking for vacuum leaks, inspecting the idle air control system, and updating the ECM software if needed.

6. Is it safe to drive a 2017 GMC Sierra with code P0506?

It may be safe to drive short distances, but prolonged driving with a low idle speed can lead to stalling and unsafe driving conditions.

7. How do I check for vacuum leaks causing P0506?

Inspect vacuum hoses for cracks or disconnections and use a smoke test to detect leaks in the intake system.

8. Can resetting the ECM clear P0506?

Resetting the ECM can temporarily clear the code, but if the underlying issue isn’t fixed, the code will return.

9. How much does it cost to repair code P0506 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue, ranging from $50 for throttle body cleaning to $300 or more for replacing parts like the idle air control valve.

10. Will cleaning the mass airflow sensor fix P0506?

If the mass airflow sensor is dirty and misreading airflow, cleaning it may help resolve the code, but it’s not always the root cause.
