Code P0506 1999 Ford F150 Description

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve assembly is used to control idle speed and provide a dashpot function. IAC valve assembly meters inlet air around the throttle plate through a by-pass within the IAC valve assembly and throttle body.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) determines desired idle speed or air by-pass and signals the IAC valve assembly through a specified duty cycle. The IAC solenoid is built into the IAC valve assembly. IAC solenoid responds by positioning the IAC valve to control the amount of air by-passed. PCM monitors engine speed and adjust the IAC duty cycle to achieve the desired RPM. IAC valve assembly is not adjustable and cannot be cleaned. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when the idle speed is less than the target idle speed by 100 rpm or more.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0506 1999 Ford F150 Code

1. What does OBDII code P0506 mean on a 1999 Ford F150?

Code P0506 indicates that the Idle Air Control (IAC) system is maintaining the engine's idle speed at a level lower than expected.

2. What are the common symptoms of P0506 in a 1999 Ford F150?

Symptoms include a rough or low idle, stalling at idle, difficulty starting, reduced fuel efficiency, or the Check Engine Light being illuminated.

3. What causes the P0506 code in a 1999 Ford F150?

Common causes include a dirty or faulty idle air control valve, vacuum leaks, a clogged throttle body, issues with the intake system, or a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor.

4. Can a dirty throttle body trigger the P0506 code?

Yes, a dirty throttle body can restrict airflow, leading to a lower idle speed and triggering the P0506 code.

5. How do you fix the P0506 code on a 1999 Ford F150?

Repairs may include cleaning or replacing the idle air control valve, inspecting and repairing vacuum leaks, cleaning the throttle body, or replacing faulty sensors.

6. Is it safe to drive with a P0506 code on a 1999 Ford F150?

While it may be driveable, it’s not recommended to ignore this code as it can cause stalling or unsafe driving conditions.

7. How do I clean the idle air control valve to fix P0506?

Remove the IAC valve, spray it with throttle body cleaner, scrub off carbon buildup, and reinstall it, ensuring the gasket is intact.

8. Can a vacuum leak cause the P0506 code?

Yes, a vacuum leak can cause the engine to receive unmetered air, leading to a lower idle RPM and triggering the code.

9. Does the mass airflow (MAF) sensor affect idle speed on a 1999 Ford F150?

Yes, a faulty or dirty MAF sensor can provide incorrect air intake readings, affecting idle speed and potentially causing a P0506 code.

10. How much does it cost to fix a P0506 code on a 1999 Ford F150?

The cost varies depending on the issue but typically ranges from $100 to $300 for cleaning or replacing components like the IAC valve or throttle body.
