AutoCodesRAM – P049D RAM

P049D RAM Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Position Exceeded Learning Limit

Quick Answer

When the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is opening to a position and uses too much current to achieve that position, the diagnostic will fail. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P049D RAM Description

When the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is opening to a position and uses too much current to achieve that position, the diagnostic will fail. Also at every key on, the EGR valve tries to recalibrate its position. The valve shaft will move until it comes into contact with the valve. If the distance the valve shaft must move is different by a calibrated amount than the originally learned movement the diagnostic fails. The valve will perform this auto zero function at every key on and every time the valve is commanded closed throughout the engine operating cycle. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will illuminate the MIL lamp after the diagnostic runs and fails in two consecutive drive cycles. The PCM will also turn on the ETC lamp. During this time the PCM will no longer control the EGR valve. The MIL lamp will turn off once the diagnostic runs and passes in four consecutive drive cycles. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when the motor effort exceeds a calibrated level or auto zero function fails.

Frequently Asked Questions about P049D RAM Code

1. What does the OBDII code P049D mean on a RAM vehicle?

P049D indicates that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system's control position has exceeded its learning limit, meaning the system is not operating as expected.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P049D?

Symptoms may include reduced engine performance, rough idling, decreased fuel efficiency, increased emissions, and the Check Engine Light turning on.

3. What causes the P049D code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty EGR valve, clogged EGR passages, carbon buildup, vacuum leaks, or issues with the EGR position sensor.

4. Can driving with the P049D code damage my RAM vehicle?

Driving with this code may not immediately damage the vehicle, but ignoring it can lead to performance issues, increased emissions, and potential damage to the EGR system or engine over time.

5. How is the P049D code diagnosed?

A mechanic typically uses an OBDII scanner to read the code, inspects the EGR valve and passages for carbon buildup, and checks related components like the EGR position sensor.

6. How can I fix the P049D code on my RAM?

Repairs may involve cleaning or replacing the EGR valve, cleaning clogged passages, replacing the EGR position sensor, or repairing any vacuum leaks.

7. Can I clean the EGR valve to fix the P049D code?

Yes, in many cases, cleaning the EGR valve and passages can resolve the issue if the problem is caused by carbon buildup.

8. What tools do I need to repair the P049D code?

You may need an OBDII scanner, basic hand tools, a carbon cleaner, and possibly replacement parts like an EGR valve or sensor.

9. Is the P049D code covered under warranty for my RAM vehicle?

It depends on your vehicle's warranty and age. Emissions-related components like the EGR valve may be covered under an extended emissions warranty.

10. How much does it cost to fix a P049D code?

The repair cost can range from $150 to $600, depending on whether the EGR system needs cleaning or part replacement. Labor costs and regional pricing may also vary.
