Code P0490 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, an H-bridge motor directional control circuit, and a signal circuit. The EGR position sensor provides a signal voltage that changes relative to the EGR position. The EGR position sensor information is transmitted between the EGR valve and the ECM on the signal circuit. The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor signal is used by the ECM to detect the proper amount of EGR flow. The ECM will close the EGR valve, then open the EGR valve to 100%. The ECM will then calculate the MAF difference and determine if the proper EGR flow has been detected. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects a short to voltage on the control circuit for greater than 2.5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0490 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0490 mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0490 indicates a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) motor control circuit, specifically a high voltage issue.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0490 in a 2017 Silverado?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, rough idling, increased emissions, and possible hesitation during acceleration.

3. What causes the P0490 code on a Chevy Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EGR valve, wiring issues like damaged connectors or short circuits, a malfunctioning EGR control solenoid, or a problem in the powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Can I still drive my 2017 Silverado with a P0490 code?

While the truck may still run, driving with a P0490 code can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and potential long-term damage to the emission system.

5. How do I diagnose the P0490 code on my 2017 Silverado?

Start by inspecting the EGR valve and its wiring for damage or loose connections. Use a multimeter to check for proper voltage and continuity in the EGR motor control circuit. You may also need a scan tool to monitor EGR system data.

6. What repairs might fix the P0490 code on a Chevy Silverado?

Repairs could include replacing a faulty EGR valve, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, cleaning the EGR passages, or reprogramming or replacing the PCM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to fix a P0490 code on a 2017 Silverado?

The cost varies depending on the issue. Replacing an EGR valve typically costs $150-$400, while wiring repairs or PCM replacement can range higher.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P0490 code to appear?

Yes, a clogged or dirty EGR valve can lead to improper operation and trigger the P0490 code due to high voltage readings in the circuit.

9. Will clearing the P0490 code fix the problem?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the issue will likely return unless the underlying cause is addressed.

10. What tools do I need to troubleshoot the P0490 code on my Silverado?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter, and basic tools for inspecting and repairing components like the EGR valve and wiring.
