Code P0490 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, an H-bridge motor directional control circuit, and a signal circuit. The EGR position sensor provides a signal voltage that changes relative to the EGR position. The EGR position sensor information is transmitted between the EGR valve and the ECM on the signal circuit. The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor signal is used by the ECM to detect the proper amount of EGR flow. The ECM will close the EGR valve, then open the EGR valve to 100%. The ECM will then calculate the MAF difference and determine if the proper EGR flow has been detected. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects a short to voltage on the control circuit for greater than 2.5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0490 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0490 mean on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0490 indicates a high voltage issue in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) motor control circuit, suggesting an electrical fault or malfunction in the EGR system.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0490 on a 2016 Silverado?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, rough idling, poor fuel economy, and possible engine knocking or hesitation.

3. What causes the P0490 code to appear on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EGR valve, damaged EGR motor, wiring or connector issues (such as corrosion or breaks), or a malfunctioning EGR control module.

4. Can I drive my 2016 Silverado with a P0490 code?

Driving with a P0490 code is not recommended, as it can lead to increased emissions, poor performance, and potential engine damage if left unresolved.

5. How do I diagnose the P0490 code on my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by inspecting the EGR valve, wiring, and connectors for damage. Use a multimeter to test the voltage at the EGR motor and verify circuit integrity. A scan tool can also help monitor EGR system performance.

6. How do I fix the P0490 code on a 2016 Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing a faulty EGR valve or motor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, cleaning carbon buildup in the EGR system, or updating the vehicle's ECU software if necessary.

7. Is the P0490 code covered under warranty for a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

It depends on the specific warranty coverage and mileage. Check your vehicle's warranty details or consult your dealership to confirm.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P0490 code?

Yes, carbon buildup in the EGR valve can restrict movement and cause electrical resistance, leading to high voltage in the control circuit.

9. How much does it cost to repair a P0490 code on a 2016 Silverado?

Repair costs can vary depending on the issue. Replacing an EGR valve typically costs $150–$400 for parts and labor, while wiring repairs may cost less.

10. Can a faulty PCM cause the P0490 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

While rare, a malfunctioning Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can cause the P0490 code. However, this should be considered only after ruling out other potential causes.
