Code P0464 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

Diesel Engine
The primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor change resistance based on fuel level. The Fuel Pump Driver Control Module monitors the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor and sends the signal information to the Engine Control Module (ECM) for all further handling. The ECM uses this value in order to determine the fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the resistances of both fuel level sensors are low, and the ECM senses a low signal voltage on both the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor. When the fuel tank is empty, the resistances of the fuel level sensors are high, and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. The ECM uses the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor in order to calculate the percentage of remaining fuel in the tank. The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

Gasoline Engine

The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects the fuel level change is greater than 10% for a duration lasting less than 30 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0464 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0464 mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Code P0464 indicates an intermittent issue in the fuel level sensor circuit, which affects the fuel gauge's ability to accurately display the fuel level.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0464 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms include an erratic or inaccurate fuel gauge, the check engine light turning on, and possible fuel range miscalculations.

3. What causes the P0464 code to appear on my Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty fuel level sensor, damaged wiring or connections in the fuel level sensor circuit, or a malfunctioning instrument cluster.

4. Can driving with P0464 damage my 2017 Silverado?

Driving with this code won't typically damage your truck, but it can lead to inaccurate fuel readings, which may cause you to run out of fuel unexpectedly.

5. How do I diagnose the P0464 code in my Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by checking the wiring and connectors near the fuel level sensor for damage or corrosion. You can also test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter to confirm if it's functioning properly.

6. How much does it cost to fix the P0464 code on a Silverado?

The cost can vary, but replacing a fuel level sensor typically ranges from $200 to $500, including parts and labor.

7. Is replacing the fuel level sensor the only fix for code P0464?

Not always. Sometimes the issue is with the wiring, a loose connection, or even the ECM or instrument cluster. Proper diagnosis is crucial.

8. Can a bad fuel pump cause the P0464 code?

A failing fuel pump itself is unlikely to cause this code, but issues with the wiring or components shared by the fuel pump and sensor could contribute to the problem.

9. Will resetting the check engine light clear the P0464 code permanently?

Resetting the light may clear the code temporarily, but if the root issue isn't fixed, the code will likely return.

10. How can I prevent the P0464 code from recurring?
