Code P0462 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

Diesel Engine
The primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor change resistance based on fuel level. The Fuel Pump Driver Control Module monitors the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor and sends the signal information to the Engine Control Module (ECM) for all further handling. The ECM uses this value in order to determine the fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the resistances of both fuel level sensors are low, and the ECM senses a low signal voltage on both the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor. When the fuel tank is empty, the resistances of the fuel level sensors are high, and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. The ECM uses the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor in order to calculate the percentage of remaining fuel in the tank. The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

Gasoline Engine

The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects the signal voltage is less than 0.25 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0462 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0462 mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0462 indicates "Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Voltage," meaning the PCM has detected a low voltage signal from the fuel level sensor.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0462 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common symptoms include erratic or inaccurate fuel gauge readings, an illuminated check engine light, and possibly difficulty starting due to incorrect fuel level readings.

3. What causes the P0462 code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Possible causes include a faulty fuel level sensor, damaged wiring or connections in the sensor circuit, a malfunctioning fuel pump assembly, or issues with the PCM.

4. Can a bad fuel level sensor trigger the P0462 code?

Yes, a faulty or failing fuel level sensor is one of the most common causes of the P0462 code.

5. How do I diagnose the P0462 code on my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by checking the fuel level sensor wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. Then test the sensor's voltage and resistance with a multimeter to verify proper operation.

6. Is it safe to drive a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with the P0462 code?

While the truck may still be drivable, inaccurate fuel gauge readings can lead to running out of fuel unexpectedly, which could cause safety issues.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P0462 code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $150 to $500, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor, wiring, or fuel pump assembly.

8. Can I fix the P0462 code on my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado myself?

If you're experienced with automotive repairs, you can inspect the wiring and replace the fuel level sensor if necessary. Otherwise, consult a professional mechanic.

9. Does the P0462 code automatically mean the fuel pump needs replacement?

Not necessarily. While the fuel level sensor is part of the fuel pump assembly, the issue could be isolated to the sensor or wiring rather than the entire pump.

10. Will clearing the P0462 code solve the problem permanently?

Clearing the code will turn off the check engine light temporarily, but if the underlying issue isn't resolved, the code will return.
