Code P0461 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Description

Diesel Engine
The primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor change resistance based on fuel level. The Fuel Pump Driver Control Module monitors the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor and sends the signal information to the Engine Control Module (ECM) for all further handling. The ECM uses this value in order to determine the fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the resistances of both fuel level sensors are low, and the ECM senses a low signal voltage on both the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor. When the fuel tank is empty, the resistances of the fuel level sensors are high, and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. The ECM uses the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor in order to calculate the percentage of remaining fuel in the tank. The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects a change in fuel level of less than a specified amount (typically 3 - 10 L or 0.8 - 2.6 gal) over a specified driving distance (typically 240 - 320 km or 150 - 200 miles).

Frequently Asked Questions about P0461 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0461 mean for a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0461 indicates that the fuel level sensor is not performing within the expected range, meaning it is providing inaccurate or inconsistent fuel level readings to the engine control module (ECM).

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0461 in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include an inaccurate fuel gauge reading, the check engine light turning on, erratic fuel level changes on the gauge, and possible reduced fuel efficiency.

3. What causes the P0461 code in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty fuel level sensor, wiring or connector issues in the fuel level sensor circuit, a malfunctioning instrument cluster, or, in rare cases, a problem with the ECM.

4. Can low fuel levels trigger the P0461 code in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Yes, consistently driving with very low fuel levels may cause the fuel level sensor to wear out prematurely or produce erratic readings, potentially triggering the code.

5. How do you diagnose the P0461 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Diagnosis typically involves using a scan tool to confirm the code, inspecting the fuel level sensor and its wiring for damage, and testing the sensor’s resistance with a multimeter to ensure it operates within specifications.

6. How much does it cost to fix the P0461 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $600, depending on whether the fuel level sensor, wiring, or other components need replacement.

7. Can I drive my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with the P0461 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, the code can lead to inaccurate fuel gauge readings, which may cause you to run out of fuel unexpectedly.

8. How do you reset the P0461 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

After repairs, the code can be cleared using an OBDII scan tool. However, it’s important to address the underlying issue to prevent the code from returning.

9. Is replacing the fuel level sensor the only solution for the P0461 code?

Not always. The issue might be resolved by repairing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or addressing faults in the ECM or instrument cluster, depending on the root cause.

10. Can a clogged fuel filter cause the P0461 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

No, a clogged fuel filter does not directly cause the P0461 code, as the issue is related specifically to the fuel level sensor's performance, not fuel delivery.
