Code P0455 2005 Nissan Altima Sedan Description

This diagnosis detects leaks in the Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) purge line using engine intake manifold vacuum. If pressure does not increase, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will check for leaks in the line between the fuel tank and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve under the following vacuum test condition.
The vacuum cut valve bypass valve is opened to clear the line between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. The EVAP canister vent control valve will then be closed to shut the EVAP purge line off. The EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve is opened to depressurize the EVAP purge line using intake manifold vacuum. After this depressurization is implemented, the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve will be closed.

1. What does the OBDII code P0455 mean for a 2005 Nissan Altima?

P0455 indicates a "gross leak" in the EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) system, meaning there is a significant leak or disconnection preventing the system from containing fuel vapors.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0455 on a 2005 Nissan Altima?

You may notice the Check Engine Light illuminated, a potential fuel smell near the vehicle, or slightly reduced fuel efficiency. However, there may be no noticeable performance issues.

3. What causes the P0455 code in a 2005 Nissan Altima?

Common causes include a loose or damaged gas cap, a cracked EVAP hose, a faulty purge valve, a leak in the charcoal canister, or a damaged fuel tank.

4. Can a loose gas cap trigger the P0455 code?

Yes, a loose, damaged, or missing gas cap is one of the most common causes of a P0455 code.

5. How do I fix the P0455 code on my 2005 Nissan Altima?

Start by tightening or replacing the gas cap. If the code persists, inspect EVAP system components like hoses, the charcoal canister, and valves for damage or leaks.

6. Is it safe to drive with a P0455 code on my 2005 Nissan Altima?

While the car is typically safe to drive, ignoring the issue can lead to increased emissions and possible fuel vapor leaks, which may be hazardous.

7. How do I diagnose the P0455 code on my 2005 Nissan Altima?

Use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, then inspect the gas cap and EVAP system components for visible damage or leaks. A smoke test may be necessary to pinpoint leaks.

8. Will replacing the gas cap clear the P0455 code?

If the gas cap was the cause, replacing it can resolve the issue. However, you may need to clear the code with an OBDII scanner or drive the car for a few cycles for it to go away.

9. Can extreme weather cause the P0455 code on a 2005 Nissan Altima?

Yes, extreme heat or cold can cause EVAP system components to contract or expand, potentially leading to leaks or triggering the code.
