P0454 2014 GMC Sierra Code - Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Quick Answer

The fuel tank pressure sensor measures vapor pressure or vacuum in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. Common causes include Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) Sensor, Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor harness is open or shorted, Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Low - monitor the vehicle and repair when practical. The vehicle can usually be driven if no severe symptoms are present, but symptoms should be checked before extended driving.

Code P0454 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The fuel tank pressure sensor measures vapor pressure or vacuum in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies a 5 V reference and a low reference circuit to the fuel tank pressure sensor. The fuel tank pressure sensor signal voltage varies depending on EVAP system pressure or vacuum. The control module also uses this fuel tank pressure signal to determine atmospheric pressure for use in the engine-off small leak test, DTC P0442. Before using this signal as an atmospheric reference, it must first be re-zeroed. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if during the engine-off natural vacuum small leak test, P0442, the ECM detects an abrupt fuel tank pressure signal change, other than a refueling event. An abrupt change is defined as a change of greater than 0.45 in H2O in the span of 1 s but less than 1 in H2O in 12.5 ms.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0454 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does OBDII code P0454 mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Code P0454 indicates an intermittent issue with the fuel tank pressure sensor circuit, which monitors the pressure in the fuel tank as part of the evaporative emissions control system.

2. What are the symptoms of a P0454 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, possible fuel odor near the vehicle, and, in rare cases, difficulty starting due to vapor system pressure issues.

3. What causes the P0454 code to appear?

The most common causes include a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, loose electrical connections, or intermittent faults in the EVAP system.

4. Can a loose gas cap cause a P0454 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

A loose or faulty gas cap typically triggers different EVAP-related codes, but it’s not a common cause of P0454. However, it’s still worth checking as part of basic troubleshooting.

5. How do I diagnose a P0454 code on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the fuel tank pressure sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. Use a scan tool to monitor sensor readings and verify if they fluctuate erratically or intermittently.

6. How do I fix the P0454 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the fuel tank pressure sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or cleaning corroded electrical connectors in the sensor circuit.

7. Is it safe to drive my 2014 GMC Sierra with a P0454 code?

While the vehicle may still run, driving with a P0454 code can result in increased emissions and may mask other EVAP-related issues. It’s best to address the problem promptly.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P0454 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary, but replacing a fuel tank pressure sensor typically costs $150–$300, including parts and labor. Wiring repairs may add to the total cost.

9. Can a bad fuel pump cause the P0454 code on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

A faulty fuel pump is not a direct cause of P0454, but related issues, such as damaged wiring near the pump or tank, could potentially contribute to the problem.

10. Will clearing the P0454 code fix the issue on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Clearing the code without addressing the root cause will only temporarily turn off the check engine light. The code will likely return if the underlying issue isn’t resolved.
