Code P0422 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The main function of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) is to control emissions of non-methane hydrocarbons and Carbon Monoxide (CO). Its secondary function is to assist with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration, by obtaining and sustaining the temperature necessary for regeneration. In order to generate the high exhaust temperatures needed for regeneration, the aftertreatment system increases exhaust temperatures by injecting diesel fuel into the exhaust system via post-injection. The injected fuel is converted into heat by the DOC to incinerate soot accumulated in the DPF. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the exhaust gas temperature sensor 3, 4, and 5 to determine if the operating temperature of the catalyst is achieved during a DPF regeneration.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0422 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0422 mean for a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P0422 indicates that the second catalytic converter in the exhaust system is not functioning efficiently, as detected by the vehicle’s ECM.

2. What are the common symptoms of P0422 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, or a sulfuric smell from the exhaust.

3. What causes the P0422 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a failing catalytic converter, faulty oxygen sensors, exhaust leaks, or engine issues like misfires or burning oil.

4. Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with the P0422 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, prolonged driving with this code can damage other components and increase emissions. Prompt diagnosis and repair are recommended.

5. How is P0422 diagnosed on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

A mechanic will use a scan tool to verify the code, inspect oxygen sensor readings, check for exhaust leaks, and test the efficiency of the catalytic converter.

6. How do I fix the P0422 code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the catalytic converter, replacing faulty oxygen sensors, fixing exhaust leaks, or addressing engine performance issues.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0422 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can range from $200 for oxygen sensors to $1,000+ for a catalytic converter replacement, depending on parts and labor.

8. Can a faulty oxygen sensor cause the P0422 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a malfunctioning oxygen sensor can give incorrect readings, leading the ECM to interpret the catalytic converter as inefficient.

9. Will a fuel additive clear the P0422 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Fuel additives may temporarily improve catalytic converter performance, but they are not a guaranteed fix for this code.

10. What happens if I ignore the P0422 code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Ignoring the code can lead to increased emissions, reduced engine performance, and potential damage to the exhaust system or other components.
