  • For the P0420 code the problem is more than likely the Catalytic Converter and not the sensor.

  • BEFORE replacing any Converters and/or 02 sensors I strongly recommend checking the PCV, PCV valve hose, Vacuum hoses, intake gaskets for leaks and replace as needed, also make sure no misfires, Codes DONT tell us whats wrong with the vehicle, they tell us what SYSTEM is malfunctioning,

  • I would only suspect an O2 sensor if the voltage is reading >1.00v or <0.00v. 9/10 an engine code for an O2 sensor (especially a stuck lean code) is tripped because of a different problem.
    The most common cause that I've seen is from a misfire.
    A $300 scanner is a better start than 2 $150 O2 sensors.
    Compare the stored codes, the stored freeze frame data (a snapshot of the operational data that caused the PCM to turn the light on), current fuel trims, & O2 sensor voltage behavior (especially the O2S2/ downstream/ post catalytic converter sensor)
    The other info. is also important but I've found that these four things point the way.
    A decent scanner will save you thousands of dollars and a lot of time on testing in the long run.
    A lot of good advice here too. P0420 is more commonly tripped by a bad catalytic converter. More common than that is a fuel or ignition related misfire. The most common cause I've seen is an air related/ lean misfire caused from unmetered air. Leaky exhaust pipes (before the O2 sensors), cracked, collapsed, or leaking vacuum hoses (especially in the PCV system), leaky intake manifold gasket, leaking throttle body, leaking injector O-rings, a dirty mass air flow sensor.
    Restricted air filter, inaccurate readings from dirty/old temperature sensors (IAT & ECT)
    P0420 can be tripped by anything affecting your fuel trims.
    If you don't have a scanner then I'd recommend starting with the vacuum lines. A short piece of vacuum hose held up to your ear will help you narrow down the source if your engine is hissing.
    Also, a god place to start is with a search for recalls and common problems with your particular vehicle.
