P041E 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Erratic

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P041E 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance has changed to greater than 25Ω in 0.1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P041E 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P041E mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P041E indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit, specifically an erratic signal being detected by the engine control module (ECM).

2. What are the common symptoms of code P041E in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, rough idling, poor fuel efficiency, or increased emissions.

3. What causes the P041E code to appear on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the sensor circuit, a malfunctioning ECM, or excessive carbon buildup in the EGR system.

4. Can I drive my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with code P041E?

While the truck may still be drivable, continuing to drive with this code can lead to reduced engine performance, increased emissions, and potential damage to other components over time.

5. How do I fix the P041E code on my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Fixes may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, cleaning the EGR system to remove carbon buildup, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or updating/reprogramming the ECM.

6. How much does it cost to repair the P041E code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs can vary, with EGR temperature sensor replacement typically costing $100–$300, depending on parts and labor. Additional costs may apply if wiring repairs or system cleaning are needed.

7. How do I diagnose the P041E code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Diagnose the issue by scanning the ECM for codes, inspecting the EGR temperature sensor and its wiring for damage, checking for carbon buildup in the EGR passage, and testing the sensor with a multimeter.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P041E code in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Yes, excessive carbon buildup in the EGR valve or passages can disrupt the EGR temperature sensor's readings, leading to the P041E code.

9. What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P041E code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

You’ll typically need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter, and basic hand tools to inspect and test the EGR temperature sensor and related components.

10. Will resetting the check engine light fix the P041E code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Resetting the check engine light may clear the code temporarily, but the issue will likely persist until the underlying problem with the EGR temperature sensor circuit is resolved.
