P041E 2016 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Erratic

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P041E 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance has changed to greater than 25Ω in 0.1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P041E 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P041E mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P041E indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit, specifically that its readings are erratic or inconsistent.

2. What are the symptoms of code P041E on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, and possible rough idling or stalling.

3. What causes the P041E code to appear?

The code can be triggered by a faulty EGR temperature sensor, corroded or damaged wiring, loose electrical connections, or an issue with the EGR valve itself.

4. Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with the P041E code?

While it may be possible to drive the vehicle, it is not recommended as it could lead to reduced performance, higher emissions, and potential engine damage over time.

5. How do I diagnose the P041E code on my GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the EGR temperature sensor and its wiring for damage or loose connections. Use a scan tool to check live data from the sensor and compare it to manufacturer specifications.

6. How do I fix the P041E code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty EGR temperature sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning the EGR valve, or replacing the EGR valve if it’s malfunctioning.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P041E code on a GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $100 to $300, depending on whether the sensor or wiring needs replacement, and whether labor costs are involved.

8. What tools are needed to repair the P041E code?

A scan tool, multimeter, and basic hand tools are commonly needed to diagnose and fix the issue, along with a repair manual for your specific vehicle.

9. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P041E code?

Yes, a clogged or dirty EGR valve can cause erratic temperature sensor readings and trigger the P041E code.

10. How can I prevent the P041E code from recurring?

Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the EGR valve and inspecting wiring connections, can help prevent this code from reoccurring.
