P041D 2017 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P041D 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance has changed greater than 25 Ω in 0.1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P041D 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P041D mean in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The code P041D indicates a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, specifically a high voltage issue in its circuit.

What are the symptoms of code P041D in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, and possible rough idling.

What causes the P041D code in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Causes may include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a short circuit, or excessive carbon buildup in the EGR system.

Can I drive my GMC Sierra with code P041D?

While the vehicle may still be driveable, ignoring this code can lead to reduced engine efficiency and potential damage to the EGR system over time.

How do I fix the P041D code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Fixes may involve replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning the EGR system, or updating the vehicle's software.

How can I test the EGR temperature sensor for code P041D?

You can use a multimeter to check the voltage output of the sensor and compare it to the manufacturer’s specifications. Alternatively, a scan tool can monitor live data from the sensor.

Does the P041D code require professional diagnosis?

Professional diagnosis is recommended to pinpoint the exact issue, especially if advanced testing of the EGR system or wiring is necessary.

How much does it cost to fix the P041D code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can range from $100 to $300, depending on whether the sensor needs replacement or if wiring repairs are required.

Can a dirty EGR system cause the P041D code?

Yes, excessive carbon buildup in the EGR system can interfere with the temperature sensor's readings and trigger this code.

What tools are needed to repair the P041D code?

Basic tools include a multimeter, a scan tool, and possibly a socket set for sensor removal. Cleaning tools like brushes or EGR cleaning spray may also be necessary.
