P041C 2016 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Low Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P041C 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance is less than 147 Ω for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P041C 2016 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P041C mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The code P041C indicates a low voltage issue in the circuit of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, suggesting a potential problem with the sensor or its wiring.

What are the common symptoms of code P041C on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms can include a Check Engine Light, reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, or increased emissions.

What causes the P041C code to appear on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, or a malfunctioning ECM (engine control module).

Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with a P041C code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it’s not recommended as it can lead to increased emissions, reduced engine performance, and potential long-term damage.

How do I diagnose the P041C code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosing involves using a scan tool to confirm the code, visually inspecting the EGR sensor and wiring, and testing the sensor with a multimeter for proper voltage and resistance.

What is the EGR Temperature Sensor's role in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The EGR Temperature Sensor monitors exhaust gas temperatures to help the ECM regulate the EGR system for optimal engine performance and emissions control.

How much does it cost to fix the P041C code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary but typically include $50-$150 for a new EGR temperature sensor plus labor, which can range from $75-$150 depending on the shop.

Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P041C code?

A dirty or clogged EGR valve usually doesn’t directly cause P041C but may contribute to related issues that affect the EGR temperature sensor’s readings.

How do I reset the P041C code after repairs on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Use an OBDII scan tool to clear the code after verifying the issue is resolved, or disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the ECM.

What should I check first when troubleshooting the P041C code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?
