P041B 2016 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 Performance

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P041B 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor has not changed greater than a calibrated amount for greater than a calibrated amount of time following a cold start.

Frequently Asked Questions about P041B 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does OBDII code P041B mean for a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P041B indicates an issue with the performance of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, which monitors the EGR system’s temperature.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P041B in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include the Check Engine Light turning on, decreased engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential rough idling.

3. What causes the P041B code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, wiring or connector issues, excessive carbon buildup in the EGR system, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

4. Can I drive with the P041B code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

While the truck may still be drivable, it’s not recommended to ignore the code as it can lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, and potential damage to the EGR system.

5. How do you diagnose the P041B code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspecting the EGR temperature sensor and wiring, and checking for carbon buildup in the EGR system.

6. How do you fix the P041B code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, cleaning or replacing the EGR valve, repairing damaged wiring, or removing carbon deposits from the EGR system.

7. What tools are needed to repair the P041B code?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, basic hand tools, and possibly a multimeter to test the sensor and wiring.

8. How can carbon buildup cause the P041B code?

Carbon buildup in the EGR system can obstruct proper airflow and cause incorrect temperature readings, leading to the P041B code.

9. Is replacing the EGR temperature sensor expensive?

The cost to replace the EGR temperature sensor varies but is generally affordable, with most expenses associated with labor if done by a mechanic.

10. Can a faulty EGR temperature sensor affect emissions?

Yes, a faulty sensor can cause improper EGR system operation, leading to increased emissions and potentially failing an emissions test.
