P041B 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 Performance

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P041B 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor has not changed greater than a calibrated amount for greater than a calibrated amount of time following a cold start.

P041B indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 1, specifically related to its performance or readings being out of range.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P041B on a 2016 Chevy Silverado?

Symptoms may include a check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, poor engine performance, or increased emissions.

3. What causes the P041B code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, wiring or connector issues, carbon buildup in the EGR system, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

4. How do I diagnose the P041B code on my Silverado?

Start by scanning for codes, inspecting the EGR temperature sensor and its wiring for damage, checking for carbon buildup in the EGR system, and testing the sensor's voltage and resistance.

5. Can I drive my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with a P041B code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it’s not recommended as it can lead to poor performance, increased emissions, and potential engine damage over time.

6. How do I fix the P041B code on a 2016 Chevy Silverado?

Repairs may involve cleaning or replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or addressing carbon buildup in the EGR system.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P041B code on a Silverado?

Repair costs can vary, but replacing the EGR temperature sensor typically ranges from $100 to $300, including parts and labor.

8. Can a dirty EGR system cause the P041B code?

Yes, carbon buildup in the EGR system can affect the performance of the EGR temperature sensor, triggering the P041B code.

9. How can I prevent the P041B code from reoccurring?

Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the EGR system and using high-quality fuel, can help prevent carbon buildup and keep the EGR components functioning correctly.

10. Does the P041B code affect emissions testing?

Yes, a P041B code can cause your vehicle to fail an emissions test due to its impact on the exhaust gas recirculation system and increased emissions.
