Code P0418 Toyota Description

An air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds the Air pump relay control circuit which energizes the Air pump. The PCM also grounds the Air combination valve vacuum control solenoid circuit, which energizes the Air vacuum control solenoid. Vacuum is then applied to both Air combination valve diaphragms which opens the shut off valves. The PCM enables both circuits simultaneously when Air system operations id desired. When the AIR system is active, then Air pump forces fresh air into the exhaust stream in order to accelerate catalyst operation. The AIR combination valves replace the conventional check valves. When the AIR system is inactive the shut off valves prevent air flow in either direction.

Encounter Secondary Air Injection System Relay A Circuit fault after cleaning the Throttle Boby?
    Any advice,

  • You would only get a P0418 code if your Secondary air pump motor has been damaged or you have an open or short in its wiring. Rarely is it the air injection driver that some resources quote first. www.hewitt-tech.com makes kits that can take care of it for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

  • Thank you for the information!!

  • I have a 2006 tundra with po418 and p2445 code .I replaced air pump fuse that was blown, and it blew again. please help and advise anyone.

  • If is blowing the fuse then either there is a short circuit on the harness (wire from the fuse to the pump) or the pump itself is damage.

  • Most often on your vehicle, when the air pump motor fails it will open circuit and cause those codes. Occasionally, when the pump motor fails it will short circuit. When this happens it can damage the air injection control driver causing itself to create a short across the big solid state "relay" which will can also be the cause of the short blowing the fuse. Our Gen I secondary air bypass kits require an extra part for the P0418 and the air injection control driver to be replaced to work but will save you from pulling the intake manifold and replacing the expensive factory components.
Our GenII units actually replace the air injection control driver(s) themselves and can take care of the P0418 without the need for any additional parts. The Gen-II units are the best solution going forward for never dealing with the system again as they are prone to failing again.
