P040E 2018 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Erratic

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040E 2018 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance has changed to greater than 25Ω in 0.1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040E 2018 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P040E mean on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

P040E indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit, specifically an erratic signal being detected.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P040E?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, the check engine light turning on, or increased emissions.

3. What causes the P040E code to be triggered?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, loose electrical connections, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

4. Can I drive my 2018 GMC Sierra with the P040E code?

Driving with this code is possible but not recommended, as it may lead to reduced performance, higher emissions, and potential damage to the EGR system over time.

5. How do I diagnose the P040E code?

Diagnose by using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspecting wiring and connectors for damage, and testing the EGR temperature sensor for proper operation.

6. How do I fix the P040E code on my GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning or replacing the EGR valve, or updating the vehicle’s software if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P040E code?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $100 to $300, depending on whether the EGR temperature sensor or other components need replacement.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause code P040E?

Yes, a clogged or dirty EGR valve can contribute to erratic sensor readings, potentially triggering the P040E code.

9. Will clearing the code with a scanner fix the issue?

Clearing the code may turn off the check engine light temporarily, but it won’t fix the underlying problem causing the P040E code.

10. How can I prevent the P040E code from reoccurring?

Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the EGR valve, inspecting wiring, and replacing sensors as needed, can help prevent this code from reappearing.
