P040E 2017 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Erratic

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040E 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance has changed to greater than 25Ω in 0.1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040E 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does code P040E mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Code P040E indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit, specifically detecting erratic signals.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P040E code?

Symptoms include the Check Engine Light being illuminated, poor engine performance, increased emissions, rough idling, and potential stalling.

3. What causes the P040E code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the sensor circuit, carbon buildup in the EGR system, or issues with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

4. Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with a P040E code?

Driving with a P040E code is not recommended, as it can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, higher emissions, and potential engine damage if left unresolved.

5. How do I diagnose a P040E code?

Diagnosis involves scanning for codes with an OBDII reader, visually inspecting the EGR sensor wiring, testing the EGR temperature sensor with a multimeter, and checking for carbon deposits in the EGR system.

6. How can I fix the P040E code on my GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, cleaning the EGR system, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming/updating the PCM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P040E code?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $100 to $300 depending on whether the EGR temperature sensor needs replacement or if additional repairs are required.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve trigger a P040E code?

Yes, carbon buildup or a clogged EGR valve can disrupt the sensor's functionality, leading to erratic readings and triggering the P040E code.

9. What tools are needed to fix the P040E code?

Common tools include an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing circuits, and basic hand tools for sensor removal. In some cases, carbon cleaner may also be needed.

10. Will clearing the P040E code solve the problem?

Clearing the code without addressing the underlying issue will only temporarily turn off the Check Engine Light, and the code will likely return.
