P040E 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Erratic

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040E 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance has changed to greater than 25Ω in 0.1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040E 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does code P040E mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Code P040E indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit, specifically erratic readings or signals.

2. What are the symptoms of a P040E code on my Silverado?

Common symptoms include the Check Engine Light turning on, reduced engine performance, rough idling, or a decrease in fuel efficiency.

3. What causes the P040E code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, carbon buildup in the EGR system, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

4. Can I drive my Silverado with a P040E code?

While you may be able to drive temporarily, it’s not recommended as it can lead to reduced performance, increased emissions, and potential damage to the EGR system.

5. How do I fix the P040E code on my Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, cleaning the EGR valve and passages, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or replacing the EGR valve if necessary.

6. How much does it cost to fix a P040E code?

Costs vary depending on the specific repair needed, but replacing the EGR temperature sensor typically ranges from $150 to $300, including parts and labor.

7. What tools are needed to diagnose a P040E code?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter to check wiring and sensors, and possibly tools to access and clean the EGR system.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause a P040E code?

Yes, carbon buildup in the EGR valve or passages can lead to erratic temperature sensor readings and trigger the code.

9. How do I clear the P040E code after repairs?

Use an OBDII scanner to clear the code, but ensure the issue is resolved first, or the code will likely return.

10. Is the EGR temperature sensor 2 the same as the EGR valve?

No, the EGR temperature sensor monitors exhaust gas temperature, while the EGR valve controls the flow of exhaust gases into the intake system.
