P040D 2017 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040D 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance is greater than 885 Ω for greater than 5 s

Frequently Asked Questions about P040D 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P040D mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P040D indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, specifically a high voltage signal detected by the engine control module (ECM).

What are the common symptoms of the P040D code?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, increased emissions, rough idling, or poor fuel economy.

What causes the P040D code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, wiring issues such as damaged or corroded connections, or a malfunctioning ECM.

Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with the P040D code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it is not recommended as it can lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, and potential damage to the EGR system.

How do you diagnose the P040D code?

Diagnosis typically involves using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, visually inspecting the EGR temperature sensor and wiring, and testing the sensor’s voltage output with a multimeter.

How is the P040D code fixed?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning the EGR system, or reprogramming/updating the ECM if necessary.

What does "high voltage" mean in relation to the P040D code?

High voltage refers to the EGR temperature sensor sending a signal to the ECM that exceeds the expected range, often due to a sensor fault or wiring issue.

How much does it cost to fix the P040D code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $300 for the sensor replacement, plus any additional costs for wiring repairs or labor.

Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P040D code?

While a dirty EGR valve is not a direct cause, it can contribute to poor EGR system performance, which may indirectly affect sensor readings.

How can I prevent the P040D code from recurring?

Regular maintenance of the EGR system, including cleaning the valve and checking wiring connections, can help prevent this issue from recurring.
