P040C 2017 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Low Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040C 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance is less than 147 Ω for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040C 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P040C mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P040C indicates a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit, specifically detecting low voltage.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P040C on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential engine hesitation.

3. What causes the P040C code to appear on my GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

4. Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with a P040C code?

Driving with this code is possible but not recommended, as it may lead to reduced performance and potential engine damage over time.

5. How do I fix the P040C code on my GMC Sierra?

Inspect and repair any damaged wiring or connectors to the EGR temperature sensor. If necessary, replace the faulty sensor.

6. Where is the EGR temperature sensor located on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The EGR temperature sensor is typically located near the EGR valve on the exhaust manifold.

7. How much does it cost to fix a P040C code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $100 to $300, depending on whether the sensor, wiring, or both need replacement.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P040C code?

While a dirty EGR valve isn't a direct cause of this code, it can contribute to related EGR system issues, so cleaning it might help.

9. How can I diagnose the P040C code on my GMC Sierra?

Use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, then inspect the EGR temperature sensor, its wiring, and connectors for damage or corrosion.

10. Will clearing the P040C code solve the issue permanently?

Clearing the code will reset the check engine light temporarily, but the underlying issue must be fixed to prevent the code from returning.
