P040C 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Low Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040C 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance is less than 147 Ω for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040C 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does OBDII code P040C mean for a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P040C indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, specifically a low voltage reading in its circuit.

2. What are the symptoms of code P040C in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common symptoms include the Check Engine Light turning on, reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, and possible engine hesitation.

3. What causes the P040C code to trigger?

The code can be caused by a faulty EGR temperature sensor, wiring issues such as shorts or open circuits, a bad connection at the sensor, or a malfunctioning PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

4. Can I drive my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with code P040C?

Driving with this code is possible but not recommended, as it can lead to performance issues and potentially cause further damage to the EGR system or the engine.

5. How do you diagnose the P040C code on a Chevrolet Silverado?

A technician will use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspect the EGR temperature sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion, and may test the sensor's voltage and resistance.

6. How do you fix code P040C on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning the EGR system, or updating/replacing the PCM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P040C code on a Silverado?

The repair cost varies but typically ranges between $100 and $300, depending on whether the sensor, wiring, or other components need replacement.

8. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P040C code?

Yes, a clogged or dirty EGR valve can affect the EGR temperature sensor's readings and trigger the P040C code.

9. How can I prevent the P040C code from occurring?

Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the EGR system and inspecting wiring connections, can help prevent this code from appearing.

10. Will clearing the P040C code without fixing the issue solve the problem?

No, clearing the code without addressing the underlying cause will likely result in the code returning and may worsen the problem over time.
