P040C 2015 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Low Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040C 2015 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance is less than 147 Ω for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040C 2015 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P040C mean on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

P040C indicates a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, specifically that the sensor is reporting a circuit low voltage condition.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P040C in a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, increased emissions, and poor fuel efficiency.

3. What causes the P040C code to appear on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

4. Can I drive my 2015 GMC Sierra with a P040C code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it may lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, and potential damage to the EGR system.

5. How do I fix the P040C code on my 2015 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or cleaning/replacing the EGR valve.

6. How do I test the EGR temperature sensor for a P040C code?

You can test the sensor using a multimeter to check for proper voltage readings and continuity, or use a scan tool to monitor live data from the sensor.

7. What tools are needed to diagnose the P040C code on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Basic tools include a multimeter, an OBDII scan tool, and potentially a wiring diagram for the EGR system.

8. Is replacing the EGR temperature sensor expensive for a 2015 GMC Sierra?

The cost varies depending on labor rates and part pricing, but EGR temperature sensors are generally not expensive components.

9. Can a clogged EGR valve trigger the P040C code on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a clogged or malfunctioning EGR valve can cause irregular temperature readings, leading to this code.

10. Will clearing the P040C code fix the issue on my 2015 GMC Sierra?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the issue will likely persist until the underlying problem is resolved.
