P040C 2014 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Low Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040C 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor resistance is less than 147 Ω for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040C 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P040C mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

P040C indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2 circuit, specifically detecting low voltage.

2. What are the symptoms of code P040C in a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include a check engine light, reduced engine performance, rough idling, poor fuel economy, and occasional stalling.

3. What causes the P040C code to appear on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Potential causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the sensor circuit, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

4. Can I drive my 2014 GMC Sierra with the P040C code?

Driving with this code is possible but not recommended, as it may lead to reduced performance, higher emissions, and potential damage to the EGR system.

5. How do I diagnose the P040C code on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the EGR temperature sensor and its wiring for damage, check the sensor’s voltage using a multimeter, and verify proper operation of the EGR valve.

6. How is the P040C code fixed on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR temperature sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning or replacing the EGR valve, or updating the engine control module (ECM).

7. How much does it cost to fix the P040C code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can range from $100 to $400, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor, wiring, or EGR valve.

8. What happens if the P040C code is ignored on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Ignoring the code can lead to worsening performance, higher emissions, and potential damage to other engine components over time.

9. Can a bad EGR valve trigger the P040C code?

Yes, a malfunctioning EGR valve can affect the EGR temperature sensor readings and cause the P040C code.

10. Is the P040C code common in 2014 GMC Sierra trucks?
