P040B 2014 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 Performance

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P040B 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EGR temperature sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. When the EGR temperature sensor is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the EGR temperature increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM detects a higher voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit with high sensor resistance. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the EGR temperature signal circuit. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR temperature sensor has not changed greater than a calibrated amount for greater than a calibrated amount of time following a cold start.

Frequently Asked Questions about P040B 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does code P040B mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Code P040B indicates an issue with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 2, specifically a performance problem or abnormal signal detected by the engine control module (ECM).

2. What are the symptoms of code P040B on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, reduced engine performance, increased emissions, and potentially a rough idle or poor fuel economy.

3. What causes the P040B code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty EGR temperature sensor, wiring or connector issues, excessive carbon buildup in the EGR system, or a malfunctioning ECM.

4. How do I fix the P040B code on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may involve replacing the EGR temperature sensor, cleaning the EGR system to remove carbon buildup, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or updating/reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

5. Can I drive my 2014 GMC Sierra with a P040B code?

While the truck may still be drivable, it’s not recommended as it can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, increased emissions, and potential long-term engine damage if ignored.

6. How can I diagnose the P040B code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Use an OBD-II scanner to confirm the code, visually inspect the EGR sensor and wiring for damage, check for carbon buildup in the EGR passages, and test the sensor’s resistance and voltage with a multimeter.

7. What is the role of the EGR Temperature Sensor 2 in a 2014 GMC Sierra?

The EGR Temperature Sensor 2 monitors the temperature of exhaust gases in the EGR system to help the ECM regulate emissions and combustion efficiency.

8. How much does it cost to repair the P040B code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

The cost of repairs can vary, typically ranging from $150 to $400, depending on whether the sensor needs replacement or additional cleaning/repairs are required.

9. Can a dirty EGR valve cause the P040B code?

Yes, excessive carbon buildup in the EGR valve or passages can interfere with sensor readings and trigger the P040B code.

10. Will resetting the code fix the P040B issue on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Resetting the code may turn off the check engine light temporarily, but the underlying issue must be addressed to prevent the code from returning.
