Code P0336 GMC Description

The crankshaft position sensor is an internally magnetic biased digital output integrated circuit sensing device. The sensor detects magnetic flux changes in the teeth and slots of the reluctor wheel on the crankshaft. The reluctor wheel is spaced at 60-tooth spacing, with two missing teeth for the reference gap. The reference gap is used to identify the crankshaft position at each start-up. The crankshaft position sensor produces an ON/OFF DC voltage of varying frequency, with 58 output pulses per crankshaft revolution. The crankshaft position sensor sends a digital signal to the ECM as each tooth on the reluctor wheel rotates past the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM uses each crankshaft position signal pulse to determine the crankshaft speed position. This information is then used to determine the optimum ignition and injection points of the engine. The ECM also uses crankshaft position sensor output information to determine the camshaft's relative position to the crankshaft, control camshaft phasing, and detect cylinder misfire.
The ECM also has a dedicated replicated crankshaft position sensor signal output circuit that may be used as an input signal to other modules for monitoring engine RPM.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Crankshaft Position Sensor signal is not detected by the ECM during the first few seconds of engine cranking.

1. What does the OBDII code P0336 mean for a GMC vehicle?

P0336 indicates a problem with the crankshaft position sensor circuit, specifically issues with its performance or signal range.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0336 in a GMC?

Symptoms include engine misfires, difficulty starting, stalling, reduced power, and the Check Engine Light turning on.

3. What causes the P0336 code in a GMC?

Common causes include a faulty crankshaft position sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a failing reluctor ring, or improper sensor alignment.

4. Can a bad crankshaft position sensor cause a GMC engine not to start?

Yes, a failing crankshaft position sensor can prevent the engine from starting because the sensor provides critical timing signals.

5. How do you diagnose the P0336 code in a GMC?

Diagnosis involves checking the crankshaft position sensor, inspecting its wiring and connectors, testing the reluctor ring, and using a scan tool to analyze live data.

6. Can I drive my GMC with the P0336 code active?

Driving with P0336 is not recommended, as it can lead to stalling or further engine damage due to timing issues.

7. How can the P0336 code be fixed on a GMC vehicle?

Repairs may include replacing the crankshaft position sensor, repairing damaged wiring, realigning the sensor, or inspecting and replacing the reluctor ring.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P0336 code on a GMC?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $100 to $300, depending on whether the sensor or related components need replacement.

9. Can a weak battery cause the P0336 code in a GMC?

A weak battery is unlikely to cause this code directly, but low voltage can impact sensor performance and trigger related codes.

10. Does the P0336 code affect fuel efficiency in a GMC?

Yes, P0336 can impact fuel efficiency due to improper engine timing and performance issues.
