Code P0305 2010 Toyota Camry Description

When the engine misfires, high concentrations of hydrocarbons (HC) enter the exhaust gas. Extremely high HC concentration levels can cause increases in exhaust emission levels. High concentrations of HC can also cause increases in the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature, which may cause damage to the TWC. To prevent these increases in emissions and to limit the possibility of thermal damage, the ECM monitors the misfire rate. When the temperature of the TWC reaches the point of thermal degradation, the ECM blinks the MIL. To monitor misfires, the ECM uses both the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. The CMP sensor is used to identify any misfiring cylinders and the CKP sensor is used to measure variations in the crankshaft rotation speed. Misfires are counted as when the crankshaft rotation speed variations exceed predetermined thresholds. If the misfire rate exceeds the threshold level, and could cause emission deterioration, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets a DTC.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0305 2010 Toyota Camry Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0305 mean on a 2010 Toyota Camry?

P0305 indicates a misfire has been detected in cylinder 5, which means the engine isn’t firing properly in that specific cylinder.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P0305 code in a 2010 Toyota Camry?

Symptoms may include rough idling, reduced power, poor fuel economy, engine hesitation, and the Check Engine Light being illuminated.

3. What causes a P0305 code on a 2010 Toyota Camry?

Common causes include a faulty spark plug, a bad ignition coil, a clogged fuel injector, low cylinder compression, or a vacuum leak near cylinder 5.

4. Can I drive my 2010 Toyota Camry with a P0305 code?

Driving with a P0305 code is not recommended as it can cause further engine damage, reduce performance, and increase emissions.

5. How do I diagnose a P0305 code on my 2010 Toyota Camry?

Start by inspecting the spark plug, ignition coil, and fuel injector for cylinder 5. You can also check for vacuum leaks, perform a compression test, and scan for related codes.

6. How do I fix a P0305 code on a 2010 Toyota Camry?

Repairs may include replacing the spark plug, ignition coil, or fuel injector for cylinder 5, repairing vacuum leaks, or addressing low compression if present.

7. Can a dirty air filter cause a P0305 code?

While it’s unlikely, a severely clogged air filter could restrict airflow and contribute to engine misfires, but it’s not a primary cause of a P0305 code.

8. Does a P0305 code mean I need to replace the ignition coil?

Not necessarily. The ignition coil for cylinder 5 could be the issue, but it’s important to test it first before replacing it.

9. How much does it cost to repair a P0305 code on a 2010 Toyota Camry?

The cost varies, but replacing a spark plug or ignition coil typically ranges from $100 to $300, while more extensive repairs like fixing low compression may cost more.

10. Can bad fuel cause a P0305 code in a 2010 Toyota Camry?

Yes, bad or contaminated fuel can cause misfires, including in cylinder 5. Draining the fuel and refilling with quality gasoline may resolve the issue.
