Code P02E1 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The intake airflow valve is a throttle plate actuator and is used to achieve high exhaust gas recirculation rates. It increases the pressure difference between exhaust and intake so that the appropriate exhaust quantity can be mixed with the intake air. The intake airflow valve contains a contactless inductive throttle position sensing element that is managed by a customized integrated circuit. The throttle position sensor is mounted within the valve assembly and is not serviceable. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the valve assembly with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, an H-bridge motor directional control circuit, and an asynchronous signal/serial data circuit. The asynchronous signal means communication is only going from the valve assembly to the ECM. The valve assembly cannot receive data from the ECM over the signal/serial data circuit. The throttle position sensor provides a signal that changes relative to the throttle blade angle. The throttle position sensor information is transmitted between the valve assembly and the ECM on the signal/serial data circuit. The ECM decodes the serial data signal into separate voltages which are displayed on a scan tool as the voltage inputs from TP sensors 1 and 2. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the desired Throttle Position and the actual Throttle Position is greater than 10%.

Frequently Asked Questions about P02E1 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does OBDII code P02E1 mean for a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Code P02E1 indicates an issue with the intake air flow valve control performance, meaning the valve is not functioning as expected to regulate airflow into the engine.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P02E1 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, rough idling, and the Check Engine Light illuminated.

3. What causes P02E1 to trigger on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Possible causes include a malfunctioning intake air flow valve, wiring issues, a faulty sensor, or excessive carbon buildup affecting valve movement.

4. Can driving with code P02E1 cause damage to my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Driving with this code for an extended period can lead to engine performance issues and potentially cause damage if the airflow imbalance persists.

5. How do I diagnose P02E1 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Use a scan tool to confirm the code. Inspect the intake air flow valve, wiring, and connectors for damage or wear. Check for carbon buildup inside the valve.

6. How can I fix code P02E1 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include cleaning or replacing the intake air flow valve, repairing damaged wiring, or replacing a faulty sensor.

7. How much does it cost to repair code P02E1 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue, ranging from $150-$500 for parts and labor, depending on whether cleaning or replacement is needed.

8. Can I clean the intake air flow valve to fix P02E1?

Yes, cleaning the valve can resolve the issue if carbon buildup is the cause, but if the valve is damaged, replacement may be necessary.

9. What tools are needed to fix code P02E1 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

You may need a scan tool, basic hand tools, and cleaning supplies like intake cleaner or a wire brush for carbon buildup.
