Code P0223 2011 Toyota Camry Description

The TP sensor is mounted on the throttle body, and detects the opening angle of the throttle valve. This sensor is a non-contact type. It uses Hall-effect elements in order to yield accurate signals even in extreme driving conditions, such as at high speeds as well as very low speeds. The TP sensor has two sensor circuits which each transmits a signal, VTA1 and VTA2. VTA1 is used to detect the throttle valve angle and VTA2 is used to detect malfunctions in VTA1. The sensor signal voltages vary between 0 V and 5 V in proportion to the throttle valve opening angle, and are transmitted to the VTA terminals of the ECM.
As the valve closes, the sensor output voltage decreases and as the valve opens, the sensor output voltage increases. The ECM calculates the throttle valve opening angle according to these signals and controls the throttle actuator in response to driver inputs. These signals are also used in calculations such as air-fuel ratio correction, power increase correction and fuel-cut control.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0223 2011 Toyota Camry Code

What does the OBDII code P0223 mean on a 2011 Toyota Camry?

The P0223 code indicates a high voltage input from the Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'B' circuit, suggesting an issue with the throttle position sensor or its wiring.

What are the common symptoms of P0223 in a 2011 Toyota Camry?

Symptoms include reduced engine performance, poor throttle response, engine hesitation, the vehicle going into limp mode, and the check engine light turning on.

What causes the P0223 code in a 2011 Toyota Camry?

Common causes include a faulty throttle position sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, a malfunctioning electronic throttle body, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

Can I drive my 2011 Toyota Camry with the P0223 code?

Driving with the P0223 code is not recommended as it may lead to reduced engine performance, poor throttle control, or the vehicle entering limp mode, potentially causing unsafe driving conditions.

How is the P0223 code diagnosed?

A mechanic will use a scan tool to check the code, inspect the throttle position sensor and wiring for damage, test the sensor’s voltage output, and verify proper operation of the electronic throttle body.

Can a dirty throttle body cause the P0223 code?

While unlikely, excessive dirt or carbon buildup in the throttle body could affect sensor readings and contribute to the issue. Cleaning the throttle body may help in some cases.

How do you fix the P0223 code on a 2011 Toyota Camry?

Repairs may involve replacing the throttle position sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning the throttle body, or reprogramming/updating the ECM if necessary.

What tools are needed to fix the P0223 code?

Basic tools include a digital multimeter to test the sensor and wiring, a throttle body cleaner, and an OBDII scanner to clear codes and verify repairs.

How much does it cost to fix the P0223 code?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $100 to $300 for parts and labor, depending on whether the throttle position sensor or wiring needs replacement.

Can a bad battery cause the P0223 code?
