Code P020E 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has the ability to learn injector timing performance. When the engine is at operating temperature, throttle closed and in deceleration fuel cut-off mode, the ECM will pulse each injector individually and measure the changes in rotational speed of the crankshaft using the input from the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM will run this diagnostic at one fuel rail pressure operating point for each injector. The ECM stores the injector timing value. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the time to build up sufficient current to open the injector is below or above a predetermined threshold.

P020E indicates an issue with the Cylinder 5 Injection Timing, where the engine control module (ECM) detects a fault in the timing of fuel injection for cylinder 5.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P020E code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include rough idling, reduced engine performance, misfires, poor fuel economy, and, in some cases, the engine stalling or failing to start.

3. What causes the P020E code to appear on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty fuel injector, wiring or connector issues for cylinder 5, a malfunctioning ECM, or fuel pressure problems.

4. Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with a P020E code?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can lead to further engine damage and reduced performance, especially if the issue causes misfires or erratic engine behavior.

5. How is the P020E code diagnosed on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

A technician will use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the fuel injector and associated wiring for cylinder 5, and test connectivity, fuel pressure, and ECM functionality.

6. What repairs can fix the P020E code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty fuel injector, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, updating or reprogramming the ECM, or addressing fuel pressure issues.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P020E code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue, but replacing a fuel injector typically ranges from $150 to $400, while wiring repairs or ECM replacements can cost more.

8. Can a dirty fuel injector cause the P020E code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a clogged or dirty fuel injector can disrupt fuel delivery and timing, potentially triggering the P020E code.

9. How can I prevent the P020E code from occurring on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Regular maintenance, including using high-quality fuel and cleaning the fuel injectors periodically, can help prevent issues with injection timing.

10. Does the P020E code always indicate a problem with the injector on cylinder 5?
