Code P020E 2015 GMC Sierra Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has the ability to learn injector timing performance. When the engine is at operating temperature, throttle closed and in deceleration fuel cut-off mode, the ECM will pulse each injector individually and measure the changes in rotational speed of the crankshaft using the input from the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM will run this diagnostic at one fuel rail pressure operating point for each injector. The ECM stores the injector timing value. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the time to build up sufficient current to open the injector is below or above a predetermined threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions about P020E 2015 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P020E mean on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

P020E indicates an issue with the injection timing for Cylinder 5, meaning the fuel injector may not be delivering fuel at the correct time.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P020E code?

Symptoms may include rough idling, reduced engine performance, engine misfires, poor fuel economy, and the check engine light turning on.

3. What causes the P020E code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty fuel injector, wiring issues, a malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM), or fuel delivery problems such as a clogged injector.

4. Can I drive my 2015 GMC Sierra with a P020E code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it can lead to engine damage, increased emissions, and reduced fuel efficiency.

5. How do I diagnose the P020E code?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connections for Cylinder 5’s fuel injector, checking for damage or corrosion. Use a scan tool to monitor injector timing and test the injector itself for proper operation.

6. How is the P020E code typically fixed?

Repairs may involve replacing the faulty fuel injector, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning the injector, or reprogramming the PCM if necessary.

7. Can a bad PCM cause the P020E code?

Yes, a malfunctioning PCM could send incorrect signals to the injector, causing timing issues and triggering the code.

8. What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P020E code?

A diagnostic scan tool, multimeter, and possibly a noid light or fuel injector tester are commonly used to troubleshoot this code.

9. How much does it cost to fix a P020E code on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can vary widely, ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on whether a fuel injector, wiring repair, or PCM replacement is required.

10. Can low fuel pressure trigger the P020E code?

Yes, low fuel pressure can affect injector performance and timing, potentially causing the P020E code to appear.
