Code P020A 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has the ability to learn injector timing performance. When the engine is at operating temperature, throttle closed and in deceleration fuel cut-off mode, the ECM will pulse each injector individually and measure the changes in rotational speed of the crankshaft using the input from the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM will run this diagnostic at one fuel rail pressure operating point for each injector. The ECM stores the injector timing value. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the time to build up sufficient current to open the injector is below or above a predetermined threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions about P020A 2016 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P020A mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P020A indicates an issue with the injection timing for Cylinder 1, meaning the fuel injector may not be functioning properly or firing at the right time.

What are the common symptoms of code P020A in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include rough idling, engine misfires, poor fuel efficiency, reduced power, and the check engine light being illuminated.

What causes code P020A in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty fuel injector, damaged wiring or connectors in the injector circuit, a malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM), or fuel delivery issues.

Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with a P020A code?

Driving with a P020A code is not recommended, as it can lead to poor engine performance, possible stalling, and further damage to the engine or catalytic converter.

How do I diagnose a P020A code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis involves inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, testing the fuel injector for Cylinder 1, and using a scan tool to monitor injector timing and PCM signals.

What tools are needed to fix a P020A code in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common tools include a diagnostic scan tool, a multimeter for electrical testing, and possibly a fuel pressure gauge to check the fuel delivery system.

How much does it cost to repair a P020A code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue, but replacing a fuel injector typically costs $150–$400, while wiring repairs or PCM replacement could cost more.

Can a dirty fuel injector cause the P020A code?

Yes, a dirty or clogged fuel injector can disrupt fuel delivery and timing, potentially triggering the P020A code.

Does the P020A code always mean the fuel injector is bad?

No, the issue could also stem from wiring problems, a faulty PCM, or fuel system issues rather than the injector itself.

How can I prevent code P020A from occurring on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Regular maintenance, such as using high-quality fuel, cleaning injectors, and inspecting wiring, can help prevent P020A and similar codes.
