Code P01D3 Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has the ability to learn injector timing performance. When the engine is at operating temperature, throttle closed and in deceleration fuel cut-off mode, the ECM will pulse each injector individually and measure the changes in rotational speed of the crankshaft using the input from the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM will run this diagnostic at one fuel rail pressure operating point for each injector. The ECM stores the injector timing value. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Fuel Injection Timing is out of range.

Frequently Asked Questions about P01D3 Code

1. What does the OBDII code P01D3 mean?

P01D3 indicates that the injection timing for cylinder 5 is retarded, meaning fuel delivery to the cylinder is delayed compared to the expected timing.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P01D3?

Symptoms may include rough engine idle, reduced fuel efficiency, poor acceleration, misfires, increased exhaust emissions, or the Check Engine Light being illuminated.

3. What causes code P01D3?

The code can be caused by issues such as a faulty fuel injector, a malfunctioning camshaft position sensor, wiring problems, a defective engine control module (ECM), or mechanical timing issues.

4. Can I drive with code P01D3?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it is not recommended due to potential engine damage, poor performance, and increased emissions.

5. How is code P01D3 diagnosed?

A mechanic will typically use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the wiring and connectors for cylinder 5, test the fuel injector and camshaft position sensor, and check for timing chain or belt issues.

6. What repairs can fix code P01D3?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty fuel injector, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, replacing the camshaft position sensor, or addressing timing chain or belt problems.

7. Can a dirty fuel injector cause code P01D3?

Yes, a clogged or dirty fuel injector may delay fuel delivery and trigger this code.

8. How much does it cost to repair code P01D3?

Repair costs vary depending on the underlying issue, ranging from $150 for sensor replacement to $1,000 or more for timing chain repairs.

9. Can a software update resolve code P01D3?

In rare cases, a software update for the engine control module (ECM) may resolve the issue if timing parameters need adjustment.

10. What happens if code P01D3 is ignored?

Ignoring the code can lead to engine misfires, increased fuel consumption, long-term engine damage, and failure to pass emissions tests.
