Code P0191 Chrysler Description

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is mapped to an idle diagnostic and runs only at idle. The key-on error monitors fuel pressure voltage at key-on after an eight-hour cold soak. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) varies fuel pressure and monitors the final fueling and engine speed to determine if the rate of change of fueling with respect to the rate of change of pressure is within the normal operation limits of the pressure sensor. The engine must be at operating temperature and must not be in an active aftertreatment regeneration mode in order to run this diagnostic. The idle monitor runs once per drive cycle and the PCM will light the MIL lamp after the diagnostic runs and fails in two consecutive drive cycles. The PCM will turn off the MIL lamp after the diagnostic runs and passes in four consecutive drive cycles. The DTC will be set when at idle, the rate of change in fueling with respect to the rate of change of pressure is below the calibrated fail high threshold or above the calibrated fail low threshold while the monitor was running.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0191 Chrysler Code

What does the OBDII code P0191 mean on a Chrysler?

P0191 indicates a Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance issue, meaning the sensor is detecting fuel pressure outside the expected range.

What are the symptoms of a P0191 code on a Chrysler?

Symptoms may include engine stalling, rough idling, poor acceleration, reduced fuel efficiency, and an illuminated Check Engine Light.

What causes the P0191 code on a Chrysler?

Common causes include a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a failing fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter.

Can a dirty fuel filter trigger a P0191 code?

Yes, a clogged fuel filter can restrict fuel flow and cause fuel pressure irregularities, potentially triggering the P0191 code.

How do you diagnose the P0191 code on a Chrysler?

Diagnosis typically involves scanning for codes, inspecting the fuel rail pressure sensor, checking the wiring and connectors, testing the fuel pump, and measuring fuel pressure with a gauge.

Is it safe to drive with a P0191 code on a Chrysler?

Driving with a P0191 code is not recommended as it may lead to poor engine performance, stalling, or potential damage to the fuel system.

How do you fix a P0191 code on a Chrysler?

Common fixes include replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning or replacing the fuel filter, or replacing a failing fuel pump.

Can a bad fuel pump cause the P0191 code?

Yes, a failing fuel pump can lead to inconsistent fuel pressure readings, triggering the P0191 code.

Can low fuel levels trigger a P0191 code on a Chrysler?

In some cases, extremely low fuel levels can cause erratic fuel pressure readings, potentially triggering the P0191 code.

How much does it typically cost to repair a P0191 code on a Chrysler?

Repair costs vary but can range from $150 to $500, depending on whether the issue involves replacing the sensor, repairing wiring, or addressing fuel system components.
