P0191 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Performance

Quick Answer

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor to constantly adjust the high-pressure fuel pump's feed rate so that the ideal pressure is permanently maintained in the high-pressure section (between the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors) by means of closed-loop control. Common causes include Low or no fuel, Faulty Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Sensor, Fuel Rail Pressure harness is open or shorted. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P0191 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor to constantly adjust the high-pressure fuel pump's feed rate so that the ideal pressure is permanently maintained in the high-pressure section (between the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors) by means of closed-loop control. The fuel rail pressure sensor transmits fuel pressure and temperature information via serial data to the ECM. When the fuel pressure is high, the signal voltage is high. When the fuel pressure is low, the signal voltage is low. The ECM controls the fuel pressure regulator, which regulates high-pressure fuel that goes to the fuel injector rails and the injectors. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the difference between the following parameters is more significant than a predefined value of the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor 1 & Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor 2 for greater than 2.6 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0191 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0191 mean on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0191 indicates a Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Performance issue, meaning the sensor's signal is out of range or inconsistent with expected values.

2. What are common symptoms of code P0191 in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include hard starting, engine misfires, rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, reduced fuel economy, or the engine entering "limp mode."

3. What causes the P0191 code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a failing fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or issues with the fuel pressure regulator.

4. Can I drive my 2015 Silverado with a P0191 code?

Driving with a P0191 code is not recommended, as it may lead to poor engine performance, potential stalling, or further damage to the fuel system.

5. How is code P0191 diagnosed?

A mechanic typically uses a scan tool to monitor fuel pressure readings, inspects wiring and connectors for damage, and performs a fuel pressure test to confirm the issue.

6. How do I fix the P0191 code on my Silverado?

Common fixes include replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning or replacing the fuel filter, or replacing the fuel pump if it’s malfunctioning.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0191 code on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $400, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor, wiring, or fuel system components.

8. Can a dirty fuel filter cause the P0191 code?

Yes, a clogged or dirty fuel filter can restrict fuel flow, causing abnormal pressure readings and triggering the P0191 code.

9. Will replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor always fix the P0191 code?

Not necessarily; if the issue stems from wiring, the fuel pump, or other components, replacing the sensor alone may not resolve the code.

10. How do I prevent the P0191 code from recurring?

Regular maintenance, such as replacing the fuel filter as recommended and inspecting the fuel system for wear or damage, can help prevent the code from recurring.
