Code P0191 2007 Ford Fusion Description

The Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Sensor is a diaphragm strain gauge device. The FRP sensor measures the pressure difference between the fuel rail and atmospheric pressure. The FRP sensor nominal output varies between 0.5 and 4.5 volts, with 0.5 volts corresponding to 0 MPa (0 psi) gauge and 4.5 volts corresponding to 26 MPa (3771 psi) gauge. The sensor can read vacuums and may lower the output voltage to slightly below 0.5 volts. This condition is normal and is usually the case after several hours of cold soak before the vehicle dome light is turned on. The FP module is energized at the same time the dome light is commanded on. A disabled or malfunctioning dome light does not affect the FP module control.
The FRP sensor is located on the fuel rail and provides a feedback signal to indicate the fuel rail pressure to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM uses the FRP signal to command the correct injector timing and pulse width for correct fuel delivery at all speed and load conditions. The FRP sensor, along with the fuel volume regulator (part of the fuel injection pump), forms a closed loop fuel pressure control system. An electrically faulted FRP sensor results in the deactivation of the fuel injection pump. Fuel pressure to injectors is then provided only by the FP module. When the fuel injection pump is de-energized and the injectors are active, the fuel rail pressure is approximately 70 kPa (10 psi) lower than FP module pressure due to the pressure drop across the fuel injection pump. Thus, if the FP module pressure is 448 kPa (65 psi), then the fuel rail pressure would be approximately 379 kPa (55 psi) if the injectors are active.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0191 2007 Ford Fusion Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0191 mean for a 2007 Ford Fusion?

P0191 indicates a problem with the fuel rail pressure sensor circuit, specifically that the sensor's performance is out of the expected range.

2. What are the symptoms of code P0191 in a 2007 Ford Fusion?

Common symptoms include engine misfires, difficulty starting, poor acceleration, stalling, rough idling, and the check engine light turning on.

3. What causes the P0191 code to appear in a 2007 Ford Fusion?

Potential causes include a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor, a clogged fuel filter, a failing fuel pump, wiring or connector issues, or a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator.

4. How can I diagnose the P0191 code on my 2007 Ford Fusion?

Use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, then inspect the fuel rail pressure sensor, wiring, and connectors. Check the fuel pressure with a gauge to determine if it's within the manufacturer’s specifications.

5. Can a dirty fuel filter trigger the P0191 code?

Yes, a clogged or dirty fuel filter can restrict fuel flow and cause inconsistent pressure readings, potentially triggering the P0191 code.

6. Is it safe to drive with the P0191 code on a 2007 Ford Fusion?

Driving with this code isn't recommended, as it can lead to engine stalling or poor performance, which may result in unsafe driving conditions.

7. How can I fix the P0191 code on my 2007 Ford Fusion?

Start by cleaning or replacing the fuel filter, inspecting and repairing wiring or connectors, replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor if faulty, and testing the fuel pump and regulator.

8. How much does it cost to repair the P0191 code on a 2007 Ford Fusion?

The cost varies depending on the issue. Replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor can cost $100-$300, while a fuel pump replacement may cost $500-$1,000, including labor.

9. Can low fuel levels cause the P0191 code on my 2007 Ford Fusion?

Yes, running the vehicle on very low fuel can cause inconsistent fuel pressure readings, potentially triggering the P0191 code.

10. Will clearing the P0191 code fix the problem on a 2007 Ford Fusion?

Clearing the code may turn off the check engine light temporarily, but unless the underlying issue is resolved, the code is likely to return.
