Code P018D 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides a 5-Volt supply to the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (FRPS). The PCM also provides a ground on the sensor return circuit. The Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor provides a signal to the PCM on the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Signal circuit. This sensor signal voltage changes based on the pressure in the fuel rail. The PCM will detect a low signal voltage at low rail pressures. The PCM will detect a high signal voltage during high rail pressure conditions. The PCM will light the MIL lamp immediately after the diagnostic runs and fails. During this time the customer may experience a power and or speed derate. The PCM will turn off the MIL light after the diagnostic runs and passes in four consecutive drive cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions about P018D 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P018D mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

P018D indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a high voltage condition in the Fuel Pressure Sensor 'B' circuit.

2. What are common symptoms of code P018D in a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include a check engine light, poor fuel economy, difficulty starting, rough idling, or reduced engine performance.

3. What causes the P018D code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty fuel pressure sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a short to voltage in the sensor circuit, or issues with the PCM.

4. Can I drive my 2014 GMC Sierra with the P018D code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, ignoring this code can lead to poor performance and potential engine damage. It’s best to address the issue promptly.

5. How do I diagnose the P018D code on my GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the fuel pressure sensor and its wiring for visible damage or loose connections. Use a multimeter to check for proper voltage and continuity in the circuit.

6. How is the P018D code typically fixed?

Repairs may involve replacing the fuel pressure sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or reprogramming/updating the PCM if necessary.

7. What tools do I need to fix a P018D code?

You'll need a diagnostic scan tool, a multimeter, and potentially basic hand tools for sensor replacement or wiring repairs.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P018D code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

The cost depends on the root cause, but replacing a fuel pressure sensor typically costs between $100 and $300, including parts and labor.

9. Can a bad fuel pump cause the P018D code?

While rare, a failing fuel pump could potentially affect fuel pressure readings, but this code is more commonly related to the sensor or wiring.

10. Will clearing the P018D code with a scan tool fix the problem?

Clearing the code will temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the issue will return if the underlying problem isn’t resolved.
