P0171 MINI Code - Mixture Control System Too Lean

Quick Answer

With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. Common causes include Intake air leaks, Faulty front heated oxygen sensor, Ignition misfiring. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P0171 MINI Description

With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.
In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).

Frequently Asked Questions about P0171 MINI Code

1. What are the common symptoms of OBDII code P0171 in a MINI?

- Common symptoms include rough idling, hesitation or loss of power, increased fuel consumption, and a noticeable decrease in overall engine performance.

2. What are some possible causes of the Mixture Control System Too Lean code in a MINI?

- Potential causes include a vacuum leak, faulty oxygen sensor, clogged fuel injectors, a dirty air filter, or a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor.

3. How can I diagnose the Mixture Control System Too Lean code in my MINI?

- You can diagnose this code by performing a visual inspection of vacuum hoses, checking for air leaks, testing the oxygen sensor, inspecting the air filter, and using a diagnostic scanner to read live data from the engine.

4. Is it safe to continue driving my MINI with the P0171 code present?

- It is not recommended to continue driving with this code present, as it can lead to further engine damage and reduced fuel efficiency. It is best to address the underlying issue as soon as possible.

5. How can I repair the Mixture Control System Too Lean code in my MINI?

- Repair options include fixing any vacuum leaks, replacing the oxygen sensor, cleaning or replacing clogged fuel injectors, replacing the air filter, or repairing/replacing the mass airflow sensor.

6. Can a dirty air filter cause the P0171 code in a MINI?

- Yes, a dirty air filter can disrupt the air-fuel mixture ratio, leading to a lean condition and triggering the P0171 code in a MINI.

7. Will a clogged fuel injector trigger the Mixture Control System Too Lean code?

- Yes, a clogged fuel injector can disrupt the proper fuel delivery to the engine, resulting in a lean air-fuel mixture and triggering the P0171 code.

8. How important is it to address the P0171 code promptly in my MINI?

- It is essential to address the P0171 code promptly to prevent further damage to the engine, ensure optimal fuel efficiency, and maintain overall vehicle performance.

9. Can a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor be the cause of the Mixture Control System Too Lean code?

- Yes, a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor can inaccurately measure the amount of air entering the engine, leading to a lean air-fuel mixture and triggering the P0171 code.

10. Is it possible for a loose or disconnected vacuum hose to cause the P0171 code in a MINI?

- Yes, a loose or disconnected vacuum hose can create a vacuum leak, disrupting the air-fuel mixture balance and triggering the P0171 code in a MINI.
