AutoCodes – MINI – P0160 MINI

P0160 MINI Code - O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected Bank 2 Sensor 2

Quick Answer

The heated oxygen sensor 2 (HO2S), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. Common causes include Faulty Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2, Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 harness is open or shorted, Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Moderate - service should be scheduled soon. The vehicle may still be drivable for short trips if it runs normally, but avoid hard driving and repair it soon.

Code P0160 MINI Description

The heated oxygen sensor 2 (HO2S), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0160 MINI Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0160 indicate on a MINI?

P0160 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates "O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 2 Sensor 2)." This means the engine control module (ECM) has detected no activity or insufficient activity from the oxygen sensor located at bank 2, sensor 2.

2. Where is Bank 2 Sensor 2 located on a MINI?

Bank 2 Sensor 2 refers to the oxygen sensor located on the second bank of the engine's exhaust system, typically after the catalytic converter. In V-shaped engines, bank 2 is opposite the bank containing cylinder number one.

3. What are common symptoms of code P0160 in a MINI?

Symptoms may include a check engine light, poor fuel economy, rough engine idle, and possibly a noticeable drop in engine performance.

4. What could cause an O2 sensor to have no activity as indicated by code P0160?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged or corroded wiring to the sensor, exhaust leaks before the sensor, or a malfunctioning engine control module.

5. How can I troubleshoot code P0160 in a MINI?

Start by visually inspecting the wiring and connectors leading to the oxygen sensor for damage or corrosion. Check for exhaust leaks near the sensor. If no issues are found, consider testing the oxygen sensor with a multimeter, or replacing it if it's suspected to be faulty.

6. Can I drive my MINI with the OBDII code P0160 triggered?

While you can still drive your vehicle, it is not recommended to do so for an extended period as it may lead to increased fuel consumption, reduced engine performance, and potential damage to the catalytic converter.

7. How do I reset the P0160 code on a MINI?

After addressing the root cause of the P0160 code, you can reset the code using an OBD-II scan tool. However, if the underlying issue is not fixed, the code is likely to return.

8. Is replacing the O2 sensor always the solution for code P0160?

Not necessarily. While replacing the oxygen sensor can often resolve this code, it's important to thoroughly diagnose other potential issues such as wiring problems or exhaust leaks before replacing parts.

9. What maintenance can prevent the P0160 code on a MINI?

Regular maintenance should include checking and cleaning connections, inspecting the exhaust system for leaks, and ensuring the oxygen sensors are functioning properly to help prevent this code.
