Code P015D 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. When the engine is started, the Engine Control Module (ECM) operates in an Open Loop mode, ignoring the HO2S signal voltage while calculating the air-to-fuel ratio. While the engine runs, the HO2S heats up and begins to generate a voltage within a range of 0 - 1, 000 mV. Once sufficient HO2S voltage fluctuation is observed by the ECM, Closed Loop is entered. The ECM uses the HO2S voltage to determine the air-to-fuel ratio. An HO2S voltage that increases toward 1, 000 mV indicates a rich fuel mixture. An HO2S voltage that decreases toward 0 mV indicates a lean fuel mixture.
The heating elements inside each HO2S heat the sensor to bring the sensor up to operating conditions faster. This allows the system to enter Closed Loop earlier and the ECM to calculate the air-to-fuel ratio sooner.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the HO2S 1 rich-to-lean or lean-to-rich average response time is greater than a calibrated value for greater than 60s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P015D 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P015D mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P015D indicates that the oxygen sensor on Bank 2 Sensor 1 has a delayed response when switching from a lean to rich condition.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P015D in a GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, and the check engine light turning on.

3. What causes the P015D code to appear in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, exhaust leaks, wiring issues, or an engine running excessively lean or rich.

4. Which oxygen sensor is affected by the P015D code?

The code refers to the upstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 1) on Bank 2, which is the side of the engine opposite Cylinder 1.

5. Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with a P015D code?

While the truck may still be drivable, it is not recommended as it can lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, or further damage.

6. How do I diagnose the P015D code on my GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis involves checking for exhaust leaks, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, and testing the oxygen sensor's response using a scan tool.

7. How do I fix the P015D code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Possible fixes include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing damaged wiring, fixing exhaust leaks, or addressing any fuel system issues.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P015D code?

Replacing an oxygen sensor typically costs between $150 and $400, depending on parts and labor, while other repairs may vary in cost.

9. Can a dirty air filter cause the P015D code?

A dirty air filter can contribute to air-fuel mixture issues, which might indirectly affect oxygen sensor performance, but it is not a primary cause.

10. Will clearing the code with a scan tool fix P015D?

Clearing the code without addressing the underlying issue will likely result in the code returning, as the problem has not been resolved.
