Code P0135 Cadillac Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the HO2S 1 heater current is out of factory specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0135 Cadillac Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0135 mean on a Cadillac?

P0135 indicates a malfunction in the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1), which may prevent the sensor from reaching its operating temperature quickly.

2. What are the symptoms of code P0135 in a Cadillac?

Common symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and potential difficulty passing emissions tests.

3. What causes code P0135 on a Cadillac?

The most common causes are a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the heater circuit, or a blown fuse related to the sensor.

4. Can I drive my Cadillac with code P0135?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, prolonged driving with this code can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and potential damage to the catalytic converter.

5. How do I fix the P0135 code on a Cadillac?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing damaged wiring, checking and replacing blown fuses, or addressing issues in the engine control module (ECM).

6. How can I confirm if the oxygen sensor is bad for code P0135?

You can test the heater circuit's resistance with a multimeter or use a scan tool to monitor the sensor's performance. If the readings are out of range, the sensor is likely faulty.

7. Which oxygen sensor is affected by code P0135 on a Cadillac?

P0135 specifically refers to the oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (the side of the engine with cylinder 1), Sensor 1 (the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter).

8. Can a dirty or clogged catalytic converter cause code P0135?

No, a dirty or clogged catalytic converter typically won't cause P0135. This code relates specifically to the oxygen sensor's heater circuit, not the catalytic converter's condition.

9. Is a blown fuse a common reason for code P0135 on a Cadillac?

Yes, a blown fuse in the oxygen sensor heater circuit can prevent the sensor from functioning properly and trigger the P0135 code.

10. How much does it cost to fix code P0135 on a Cadillac?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $150 to $400, depending on whether you need a new oxygen sensor, wiring repairs, or other fixes.
