The Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. When the engine is started, the Engine Control Module (ECM) operates in an Open Loop mode, ignoring the HO2S signal voltage while calculating the air-to-fuel ratio. While the engine runs, the HO2S heats up and begins to generate a voltage within a range of 0 - 1, 000 mV. Once sufficient HO2S voltage fluctuation is observed by the ECM, Closed Loop is entered. The ECM uses the HO2S voltage to determine the air-to-fuel ratio. An HO2S voltage that increases toward 1, 000 mV indicates a rich fuel mixture. An HO2S voltage that decreases toward 0 mV indicates a lean fuel mixture.
The heating elements inside each HO2S heat the sensor to bring the sensor up to operating conditions faster. This allows the system to enter Closed Loop earlier and the ECM to calculate the air-to-fuel ratio sooner.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the heated oxygen sensor is shorted to ground if the HO2S voltage is less than 50 mV.

    I have a 2002 Honda Civic 2dr Coupe LX
    I'm also running into the problem with P0131 code, I'm somewhat good at working on my on vehicles, but this civic has given me a run for the money. I have change the 02 sensor recommended by the dealer, (purchase from the dealer - Honda) after I could not figure out the problem, later on that day, the code came back, went back to the dealer, they kept the car for 1 day & called the next morning to say I would need a new ECM. Well before I spent $900 on a new ECM I went to the junk yard & brought 2, yes 2 ECM's, I was able to get them both to work after programming the immobilizer, but that CHECK ENGINE light came back on both ECM's,
    New - fuel pump, spark plugs, map sensor, air filter, 02 sensor top & bottom, exhaust manifold & cat, iac valve.

    Also the dealer stated the connection tested good from the 02 sensor to the ECM & the service guy stated I had they latest software upgrade, because they also did the recall of the air bags.
